World Listening Day

Civility starts with our ears — listening more. Responding more. Reacting less. July 18 was World Listening Day, and although it’s a day set aside to appreciate the relationship between people and the natural world “as mediated through sound,” it got me thinking about everyday interactions between people. It really is okay to listen to someone else talk. And, hey — someone else can even be right once in a while!

We can take action. We can fight for what we believe in. We can have our say. But when we let the other side finish, we make sure that the actions we take and the words we say are best for the situation — targeted to the right issue, aimed at the right behavior, and responding in the right tone to the right points.

World Listening Day is gone for this year, but you still have ears and a mouth. How will you handle disagreements in your life?
