Nobody Life Is about Being Open to Learning – A Lesson from Confucius

I am not one who was born in the possession of knowledge; I am one who is fond of antiquity, and earnest in seeking it there.

– Confucius, The Analects-7

We’re born to learn. And when we learn, we’re reborn! This quote about knowledge is one of the reasons why great philosopher, Confucius’ teachings endure to this day.

As much as there are new and exciting things to learn out there in this great big world, it’s important not to discount the wisdom of the ancients. It’s a passion of mine, and it’s the reason I wrote my books. I love looking to the past to see what kind of bridges we can build to modern times. If gold was mined in days past, can we melt it into golden coins we can spend today?

We aren’t born knowing things (at least, not things like math or biology). We learn things over time. And once we start to appreciate the wisdom of those who came before, we can make more informed decisions today. Do we have to agree with it all? No. Do we have to embrace everything that the ancients said? Of course not!

But be curious. Study a little bit. Find out more about what the ancients had to say about simplicity. Read some ancient words on mindfulness. Maybe get some clarity around something that’s bothering you in your modern life. Remember the importance of loving your neighbor. Remember that the unexamined life is not worth living. Remember not to envy. Ponder the idea that you may not exist — or that your existence is so profound, you can’t imagine how big it is. Revisit, revise, and relearn.

Embrace the wisdom of antiquity that resonates with you, and never stop learning. Never stop seeking in earnest.
