National Simplicity Day

Did you know there was a “National Simplicity Day”? We didn’t either. But now, it’s one of our favorite holidays! It falls on July 12 and honors the birthday of Henry David Thoreau, the Transcendentalist philosopher, poet, and environmentalist.

Thoreau was big into living the simple life and getting back to basics so that we can get back in touch with our feelings. And in these wild times we’re in, I can’t think of anything more important. National Simplicity Day sounds like a great way to cut through the labels and pressures we put on ourselves and return to a simpler side of life – the nobody life – and get back to our core. To simple things. To what matters.

Here are a few ways we celebrated:

  • J. A. shaved. That’s right. Just a simple act of shaving was enough to restore a little comfort and civility during a hectic time.
  • Melissa rearranged some furniture. We decluttered a bit and created some usable space where before we just had a mass of…well…stuff!
  • We both ate simple meals. This is something we’ve been trying for a while, but on National Simplicity Day, it was all about the five-ingredient meals…simple and clean.

Although things get complicated during the day, it doesn’t take much to simplify life a little bit. Simplicity doesn’t mean chucking it all out or moving to Walden Pond to swim with Thoreau’s ghost. It can be one small step you take to clean out a corner of your closet, share one kind word, or…well…just groom a little bit and revisit your body.

Let us know how you like to simplify!
